Now that summer is here, your tractor is probably getting a real workout in the fields and on your property. Tractors are so versatile that they can be used for dozens of different tasks, thanks to all the attachments and implements you can equip them with. However, it’s also important to make sure that you’re keeping your tractor maintained so that it can function properly and not break down in the middle of your work.

1. Inspect Battery

Take a look at the battery in your tractor’s engine to ensure that it’s clean and that all the connections are snug. You don’t want there to be any crusty deposits or loose wires. The battery should be charged up and ready to go. If you need to leave your tractor for a few weeks, it’s a good idea to keep the battery on a tender to ensure it doesn’t lose all its charge.

2. Look Over Belts

The belts in your tractor’s engine help to keep it functional, and they’re liable to crack and break, particularly in hot weather. Always inspect your belts to make sure they’re not worn down, and replace any that need replacing.

3. Check Your Tire Pressure & Condition

Use a tire-pressure gauge to check the tires on your tractor and inflate them as needed to the psi levels specified in the owner’s manual. You’ll also want to analyze the condition of each tire and determine if you need to replace any. Signs of significant wear include balding treads, cracks in the sidewall, and embedded objects.

4. Change & Top Up Fluids

All the fluids in your tractor’s engine work together to help it operate efficiently, but if they’re low or dirty, your tractor won’t work as well and it might even just stop. Before you start your work, make sure the gas tank is at least half-full of fresh fuel, the oil has been changed and is topped off, and your coolant is replenished. If you ever see pooling fluids underneath the tractor, this is a sign of a maintenance issue that needs attention promptly.

5. Get Your Cab Ready For Work

Finally, you’ll want to make sure that your cab is all ready for you. Sweep out any leaves and other debris, remove any items that don’t absolutely need to be there, wipe down the console and controls with a wet cloth, and sit in the seat so you can adjust all the features to your liking. It’s a good idea to test your cab’s climate control options if it has any and make sure that your lights and other electronics work properly.
