Early Days

Following the end of World War II, on October 2, 1945, the company Mahindra & Mohammed was founded by brothers KC and JC Mahindra and their associate, Ghulam Mohammed, in Mumbai, India. At first, the company primarily traded in steel before gaining the license to produce Willys Jeep vehicles.

Indian and Pakistan were parted in 1947, and Mohammed moved to Pakistan in order to become the nation’s inaugural Finance Minister. The company remained in the brothers’ hands so they called it Mahindra & Mahindra instead.

In 1955, Mahindra & Mahindra went public and its stocks hit the Bombay Stock Market in 1958. International Harvester, the American agricultural manufacturer, joined forces with Mahindra & Mahindra soon thereafter to produce tractors. By the 1980s, Mahindra became the largest-selling tractor brand in India and it retains this impressive position to this very day.

Mahindra Group

Because of the many companies that Mahindra took under its wing over the years, the conglomerate Mahindra Group was formed to manage the many brands and services under its jurisdiction. Some of those famous brands include the International Tractor Company of India, Maxi Motors Financial Services Limited, Automobiles Peugeot France and British Telecom.

Due to the difficulty in managing all these diverse business options, the Mahindra Group was split up in 1994 into several Strategic Business Units that each held a focus on one type of industry. The SBUs are Farm Equipment, IT, Infrastructure Development Services, Steel Trading, Financial Services and Automotive. Mahindra manages 22 different industries as a result and is high on the list of Fortune India 500 companies.

Farm Equipment

Of course, farm equipment remains one of the most important parts of the Mahindra brand, thanks to the fact that they’ve been India’s leading tractor producer for four decades running. In fact, by sheer volume, the company is actually the world’s largest seller of tractors, too! Mahindra also produces a variety of tractor implements to suit its machines and assist farmers all around the world in taking care of their agricultural business.
