If you intend to use your tractor through the winter, you’ll need to take some steps to prepare it. Winter tractor maintenance is crucial to your tractor’s performance and overall functioning. You’ll also want to make sure that your tractor is ready to be stored for long periods of time over the winter since you probably won’t be using it nearly as much as you would in the springtime. Here’s what you should do.

1. Change the Oil

In very cold New England winters, the oil in your tractor’s engine can become thick and stiff. This is why you should change the oil to one that is designed to remain viscous and flow in freezing temperatures. Stay on top of your oil changes and check the oil often, but only after you’ve let the engine run for a few minutes to warm it up; otherwise, your result won’t be accurate.

2. Attend to Tires

Make sure that your tractor’s tires are in good condition. Tires can suffer in cold weather because the air pressure in your tires will fluctuate. Check each tire with a tire pressure gauge and compare the readings to the manufacturer’s suggested psi levels.

3. Store Indoors

In order to protect your tractor and keep it functioning properly, it’s best to keep it stored indoors, rather than leaving it outside in the snow. A covered tractor that’s stored safely in a barn or shed will incur less damage than one that is left to the elements.
