Spring has sprung, which means that tractors all over New England are cultivating, plowing, mowing, and performing other necessary tasks. However, spring rains may have made your fields muddier and wetter than usual, which can result in your tractor becoming mired in sludge. If you find yourself in this predicament, try some of these strategies to get your tractor free again so that you can continue working.

Put It in Reverse

It may be that all you have to do to get yourself free is to put your tractor in reverse and carefully back out of the puddle. If you find that your wheels spin or the tractor doesn’t move, stop and reconsider.

Grab a Shovel

A shovel can help you dig out your tractor enough that you can drive it back out again. Scrape as much muck away from the tracks or tires as you can.

Use Planks

A few long pieces of wood can be aligned with your tractor’s tires or tracks to give you a path that you can drive over, either in forward or reverse motion. Make sure you line the planks up carefully and have someone help guide you as you ride over them.

Phone a Friend

If all else fails, call one of your neighbors who has a reasonably strong tractor with a tow bar and have them bring it over to hitch up to your machine. The other tractor should be able to pull your tractor out of the mud enough for you to gain some traction.
